Dates: 26 August, and 2nd, 9th & 16 September 2024
Times: 4.30pm to 6.30pm (4pm setup)
This class will run over four weeks, two hours each Monday evening as listed above. A materials list will be sent with the registration acknowledgement email.
Aim of this class– This is an introduction to sewing and children will be following a commercial pattern on their own, learning correct terminology as written in the pattern instructions. We usually recommend children (and even adults) start with Pjs as they wear this at home and don’t tend to worry so much about perfection. Children can then can progress to clothing or fine tuning their skills later. The top is usually stretch fabric while the pants are woven fabric to give the children a variety of sewing skills with different fabrics.
What they learn – To follow instructions and the process of sewing a garment, to learn about seam allowance, and its importance to the garment. They will also learn how to pin and how to rectify their own mistakes. They will also learn how to wind bobbins and maintain their own machine, change needles, adjust tension, using different feet and stitches.
This is a fun way for children to start, or enhance, their sewing journey by following a pattern. Research has proven that children who sew develop confidence and learn fine motor skills. Sewing also improves hand eye coordination, teaches them maths, shows them how to plan and organize, nourishes creativity and uniqueness, and teaches them diligence.
