Here at Canberra Sewing, we offer a wide range of classes that cover a huge range of topics to suit all abilities.  Our teachers have years of experience in teaching a wide range of subject areas that cover on sewing and fitting garments to patchwork and quilting.  We have small class sizes for the best participant experience and ensure that classes all have the relevant paperwork so you know what to bring and what to expect.

Introduction to Patchwork with Anne Maree Jacobs

Cost $300

Dates: 18 June, 2, 16 & 30 July, 6 & 20 Aug, 3 & 17 September 2022

Times: 9.30 – 11.30am

Classes are 2 hrs long over 8 sessions learning two blocks each week and getting progressively harder.

Introduction to Applique with Leonie Fraser

Cost: $175

Dates: 22 & 29 July 2022

Time: 9:30am set up for a 10:00 start, finishing at 2:30pm

Focus of this workshop: Machine Applique

Learn to use your machine to produce different styles of applique on your machine – raw edge, blanket stitch, zigzag, satin stitch and invisible on day one, then go on to construct a table runner of your choice using applique on the second day of this course.  Choose to make a runner that suits your decorative style in this day that will show you how to applique on your machine using your choice of techniques, while allowing you the freedom to choose what you wish to applique onto your runner. 

Level of skill required for this workshop: Suitable for beginners and all levels of experience with machine applique.

Australian Applique Wall Hanging with Leonie Fraser

Focus of this workshop: Machine Applique and picture quilts

This is the most adorable wallhanging or quilt that we have seen in some time. Whilst it may look complicated Leonie has simplified it to be suitable for intermediate to advanced sewists – click on More at the end of this article for a full description.

Note: The kit, valued at $100 contains the pattern and 30 different batik prints to use in the applique – this is excellent value.

Quilt Top in a Day – Layer Cakes with Leonie Fraser

Cost $95

Date: 2 September 2022

Time: 9.00am setup for a 9.30am  start, finishing at 3pm.

Layer cakes can contain hidden surprises – a package of 10” squares of a coordinating range of fabric – 42 of them.  By adding a simple contrast fabric, we can end up with a queen bed topper using just one layer cake – another perfect gift quilt that is easy to finish.  What is more, it can be quilted using straight line quilting for a fast finish.

Focus: Machine Pieced Patchwork using rotary cutters and rulers, and
sewing techniques on your machine.

This course can be completed without hand sewing or templates.

Focus: Machine Pieced Patchwork using rotary cutters and rulers, and sewing techniques on your machine.  This course can be completed without hand sewing or templates.

Charm square packs offer the chance to make a quilt with a scrappy feel of having lots of different patterns without the need to worry about coordinating colours as the designer has done that for you – all the squares in a charm pack will definitely go together!  One charm pack will make a throw or lap sized quilt, while two charm packs will make a full queen sized bed quilt (but will take a bit more than a day to complete!).  This pattern will make an attractive quilt to gift – or keep for yourself!

Kaleidoscope Quilt with Leonie Fraser

Times: 9.30am setup for a 10.00am  start, finishing at 2.30pm.

Focus: Machine Pieced Patchwork using rotary cutters and rulers, and sewing techniques on your machine.

A Kaleidoscope quilt is made using the colours of the fabric prints and clever cutting to make blocks that resemble the patterns made by a kaleidoscope. In this workshop, which introduces the techniques of Kaleidoscope quilting, we will use one print fabric only to create a myriad of different WOW blocks, and a sold fabric to join them together with.

Level of skill required for this workshop: No previous experience with machine piecing for quilting required; suitable for beginners and those wanting to expand or review their skills, or learn a design that can be completed relatively quickly. You will need to be familiar with your machine and confident with threading and selecting and changing stitches.

Babylock Club with Jenny

This month we will be making a lined tote bag with a handy zipped pocket inside and an outer pocket as well. This has so many uses.

Techniques You Will Learn

Sewing a zipper with your overlocker, wave stitch or decorative overlocking stitches, and more,.

A downloadable materials list will be sent with registration acknowledgement email.

This friendly club will help you to get you familiar with your Babylock Overlocker and realise its full potential.

A different project is completed each month with the class operating on a class by class booking system.

So come along and have some fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

Focus: Ruler work Quilting

Develop your ruler quilting skills by completing a series of blocks that will use the quilt as you go method to complete a beautiful quilt. We will use blocks with patterns designed to develop your skills, and encourage your variations and adaptations.  You will explore a range of effects possible when using Rulers and Templates designed for use with a domestic sewing machine.

At the end of this course you will be able to confidently quilt your own tops with a variety of patterns. We will look at techniques, threads, material, needles and accessories. You can start quilting with this course, or follow up from the one-day introduction to expand your ruler quilting repertoire.

Using rulers can open up a world of possibilities in your quilting life – and the cost of the ruler foot and rulers is easily recouped in not paying for commercial quilting on one quilt!

Description

Quilting your own quilt in free motion quilting on your own sewing machine is very satisfying and you get the design that you want. It also saves a lot of money.

This course will encourage you to break away from straight lines with the walking foot to be more adventurous in your quilting, taking you through the steps required and boost your confidence and creativity.

Over the 4 sessions you will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in free motion quilting.  If you do all the sessions and homework, you can decide whether you will end up with cushions, a throw or a bed quilt.

You will choose your materials and will be provided with designs by Leonie that you can confidently complete at home.  Leonie will also assist you to decide whether designs you bring to class are suitable for free motion quilting.

This workshop has a minimum age of 14.

Leonie’s classes will make sewing for both new and experienced sewers fun. Learn how to use your machine while making some items to show off and use! Over the three days of this course you will learn how to use your sewing machine safely while we make a tote bag with pockets, a zippered pouch, and an item of your choice. Classes are aimed at inspiring sewers to learn sewing basics whilst getting to know their machines, and use their creative talents.
