Garment Mending Class with Lynne Johnson, commencing 22 January 2025
$100.00
Dates: Wednesdays 22nd and 29th Jan 2025
Times for each day: 10am – 12pm (9.30am setup)
Focus: To Learn the skills of mending a garment, e.g. taking up jeans, blind hemming, sewing on buttons, replacing zips taking in or replacing elastic.
Level of Skill required for this workshop: Beginner to advanced.
Lynne Johnson is a very experienced and sharing teacher who has many years of sewing experience.
This 2-week course will provide you with the skills and confidence to mend a garment like a professional. In no time you will recoup the cost of the course from the savings you will make on repairing your garments. And believe it or not repairing a garment can be fun and innovative – far from boring!
How many times do you have a zip fail on your favourite pair of pants, or another favourite garment develops a hole in a difficult/obvious spot. Because it is a favourite garment you tend to take it to a repairer and pay a fortune to have it fixed. How many times do you look at a thick hem and think I could not possibly take that up – but Lynne will show you how easy it really is.
It would be hard to count how many times you buy a garment to have the button fall off, or a seam come undone on the first wear. Lynne will teach you how to sew on a button that will never come off!
The average cost of replacing a zip on a pair of jeans is $35, altering a hem is $20, taking a garment in is $50, even sewing on a button can cost $15, and so on. In this age we are very conscious of fabric and garment waste and preserving rather than discarding.
The great thing about this short course is you gain the skills, tips and techniques to confidently do your own repairs – which you can do in your own time and on multiple garments – you will save a fortune. If you don’t have a machine buy one – what you will save will more than pay for it.
Tip – don’t tell your friends about your new skills, or you will be doing everyone’s garment repairs – instead encourage them to also attend this course to expand their own repertoire.
So lets get into the ethical garment repair and sustainable fashion and do our own garment (or other items) repairs!
A link to the materials list will be sent in your acknowledgement email.
