Intro into Stretch Knit Fabrics with Merle – Saturday 17th October 2026

Time: 10am to 1pm (9.30am setup)

This class will provide information about fibers and fabrics with a focus on stretch knit fabrics. The aim is to give you confidence when sewing with stretch fabrics at home. We will explore how knits are made, suitable needles and stitches to use, as well as measurements, patterns and negative ease.

We will touch on the following within the time we have available:

• Fibre and Yarns: different fibres and how to identify them
• Fabrics: woven, stretch versus stretch woven, fleece, and rib
• Stretch Fabric Construction: weft, warp, double knits
• Machine Knitting: how it works, flat versus circular
• Threads and Needles: which ones are suitable for different fabrics
• Interfacing: what to use and where
• Sewing Stretch Fabric: domestic sewing machines, stitches, seam choices, overlockers
• Fabric Care: care symbols, fiber content, drying, pressing
• Patterns for Stretch Fabric: negative ease, choosing appropriate fabric
• Stretch Guide: what it is and how to use it
• Personal measurements: take accurate measurements with a fit buddy, select appropriate pattern size.

Note: This class is recommended prior to registration for the Stretchy Stitches: Joggers classes on 7th and 14th November 2026 and will entitle you to a $25 in-store gift voucher when you register for that class as well as this one.
