Foundation Flutterflies with Paula – Fridays 20 & 27 March 2026
$250.00
Date: Fridays 20th and 27Th March
Time: 10am to 3.30pm (9.30am setup)
Want to learn Foundation Piecing? Need an easy beginner pattern that is quick, easy to understand and helps you to achieve a technique that is precise and satisfying. You can use either coordinated scraps or FQs for the majority of this little beauty. Another super cute quilt that comes together quickly to make 3 different sized Mariposa (butterflies).
You’ll be guided throughout the entire class from cutting the pieces, finding and using the foundation piecing technique that suits you to finishing your cot or lap sized quilt top.
Foundation Piecing Background: Most people don’t know that Foundation Piecing goes way back to the 18th and 19th Century but was only popularised in the 1970’s. It’s a technique that helps quilters achieve precision especially in points but also to create the multitude of modern blocks which are more intricate in their designs – often with an extreme number of tiny pieces. Foundation Piecing is a machine sewn pattern using “guidelines” for sewing and numbering that you can follow.
Skills: No previous patchwork or quilting experience is necessary. It is suitable for both beginners and more advanced sewists wanting to give foundation piecing a go or learn a different technique that will support. This class supports your machine piecing patchwork skills using rotary cutting and rulers and straight lines on your sewing machine. This course can be completed without hand sewing or needing to buy expensive templates.
This workshop will develop the following skills:
Choosing fabrics that will come together to compliment the pattern for a great finished project that you love.
Identifying the best Foundation piecing technique for you
Accurate cutting of fabric using rotary cutter, ruler and mats
Precision in points within the pattern block
Setting up your machine for piecing fabric
Identifying the tools that suit you for stitching an accurate ¼” seam
Understanding why we press rather than iron in patchwork
Matching seams
The ‘flip and snip’ method common to many patchwork patterns
